Kanban Pizzaria for classes

Create a room, show the code, and the class plays the same night, with the same orders, on their own phones. The dashboard shows who has played, the wait distribution and the strategies that worked best and worst.

45 minute lesson plan

  1. 5 min · OpeningDo not explain Kanban. Just say: "you will run a pizzeria kitchen; only the pizza that leaves the door counts". Show the room code.
  2. 10 min · Night 1Create the room on night 1 and let the class play with no guidance. Most people accept everything that comes in.
  3. 5 min · First conversationShow the wait distribution on the dashboard. Ask: where did pizzas get stuck? What went soggy, and why?
  4. 10 min · Night 3Open another room on night 3. Each person picks their own limits. Compare strategies on the dashboard: who limited less, who limited more.
  5. 10 min · DebriefUse the three questions below and connect them to the group’s real work.
  6. 5 min · ClosingAsk each person for one sentence: what they would change on their own board tomorrow. Download the anonymous CSV if you want a record.

Debrief questions

  1. Why did the people who accepted fewer orders deliver more, or about the same, with less waiting?
  2. Where was the oven in your work: the step that sets how much gets done?
  3. What would be the first WIP limit you would test, and at which step?

What to look for on the dashboard

  • High wait with lots of pizzas in the trash: the class piled work in front of the oven.
  • Very low limits barely cost delivery in this kitchen, because the oven has a line and two slots. On night 4, with the incidents, they already leave the oven idle. In real work, a limit that is too low starves the bottleneck: adjust by watching whether the oven stops.
  • The strategies that work best keep low limits before the oven and only pull when there is room.

Frequently asked questions

Do students need an account?

No. They join with the code, pick a nickname and play. Only the person who creates the room needs a free account.

Can I trust the results?

Yes. The server replays each night from every student’s moves, with the same engine as the game. Nobody can send a made-up score.

How many people fit in a room?

There is no practical limit for a class. The dashboard refreshes by itself every 5 seconds.

What is stored?

The room only shows the nickname and the night’s result. The downloadable CSV is anonymous.
